What will the future of media look like?

If you attended Ross Dawson’s Future of Media Summit in Sydney or Silicon Valley yesterday, there are a few core take-aways you might have been left with: the artificial split/war between journalism and new media prevails everyone - PR, journalism, advertising and broadcasting - is trying to figure out this social networking and social media stuff (and I guess that’s good for people like me who can help with that) old media is changing and coming into the new world, although the old “pump it o.....

ED in '08: From Nonpartisan to Bipartisan?

ED in '08's Roy Romer and Sen. Barack Obama have now entered the hugging phase, which brings me to the following question: How nonpartisan can an organization be when its leader and chief spokesman is so partisan? Before Obama delivered his major education speech at a school outside of Denver on Wednesday, he got an enthusiastic introduction from former Colorado Gov. Romer, and a hug, as pictured in the AP photo above. Romer, who is also the chairman of the nonpartisan ED in '08 campaign, i.....

    Who's right about Education Trust?

There's a clash of views over at the multi-author blog I participate in, Education Policy Blog, after a post by Jim Horn on how Education Trust staffer Amy Wilkins responded to fellow blogger Dan Brown at the Ed in '08 blogger summit, Philip Kovacs wrote about his concerns that Ed Trust was mostly for propaganda, I said that we need better research on the role of philanthropies in education policy, and Jim Horn suggested that we take Rick Hess's term "muscular philanthropy" seriously as the goal.....

    Worthy Spam?

This announcement came in as akismet trapped spam, but it seem authentic, so I checked it out. The documentary is apparently the real thing, and there’s a real web site at the address below. Not my cup of tea, but I thought I’d pass is on. –Hugh Dear Education Blogger, I just wanted to make sure that you were invited to our education “Blogger Summit”. We hope you can make it and feel free to share this invitation with any other bloggers in the area that might be interested. The invitation .....

Dan Brown: Watch and Join a Heated Three-Minute Education Debate

At last week's Ed in '08 Blogger Summit, I asked a question about alternatives to high-stakes testing to the education policy panel and received an answer that had attendees coming up to me for the rest of the conference. Watch the three-minute exchange here: What do you think of this? The education-blogging community seems to have a bunch to say about it: Robert Pondiscio at Core Knowledge sees an opportunity for Teach for America to use its political capital to support Amy Wilkins's drea.....

Why Do TV One And BET Suck So Badly!?!?

"We Need Our Own Republic, Just Like The Dominicans."[A] I know most of ya'll visit AB.com for my savoir faire, endless wit, and of course Negro Nonsense. And that's why I feel sorta bad about gettin' all deep and whatnot on ya'll this week. We've hit a number of serious and somewhat depressing topics crucial to the State of Black America; from our Civil Rights organizations, to Historically Black Colleges, the gender/racial achievement gap in education, and the decline of the black sitcom. All.....

Ed in 08 Bloggers Summit - part 2

The other day I wrote about the Ed in 08 event I attended in Washington DC last week. Although it was a nice event, I really didn’t get what I expected out of it. I expected more details about their platform. The Ed in 08 campaign is a plan to get the presidential candidates to talk more about education and create more urgency in American politics for improving education. Their three policy pillars are: Higher standards More effective teachers More time and support for learning Uh huh, sure.....

The Quiet Death of Black Television.

Latarian. So, after this upcoming three day weekend from the Day Job, I'll be back on my usual ignant grizzly. Life's just easier that way. Anyways, I hate to end the week on an equally somber note, but yesterday's discussion about the atrocity that is Black TV made me think about a related issue. Since TeeVee generally Sux, the AverageHousehold usually tunes in to CNN, MSNBC, and yep, even Fox News to try and keep up with the day's scuttlebutt. Watching this whole "historic Presidential campai.....

    Ed in 08 Bloggers Summit

Last week I had a last minute opportunity to be in Washington DC for a day. It happened to be a day that Ed in 08 was having a Blogger Summit “…to discuss how the Internet is changing the discourse of education reform, and how those changes are affecting the 2008 presidential election.” Before this event, I’d read a little about Ed in 08 - it seemed to me to be a lot of money to promote very little. They use a lot of vague words — “strong” schools, the need for “reform” without explaining what.....

Dan Brown: Newt Gingrich and Me: A Charged Moment at an Education Blogger Summit

Ed in '08, the Gates/Broad funded advocacy campaign, hosted the first-ever education "blogger summit" this week at the Hotel Palomar in D.C. You may wonder, what happens at an education blogger summit? Were there intellectual cage matches for snarkiest wit? Gold stars for citing the most stats in the latest Education Sector report on inequity in school funding? Not exactly, but there were some lively discussions about the future of public education, agreement on the need to turn up the volume.....

    More Time To Learn

I'm at the ED in '08 blogger summit, and Chris Gabrieli is speaking about his book Time to Learn. His main premise is that the current model of only spending 6 hours per day and 180 days per year in the classroom is obsolete. He wants to expand the school day so there is more time to learn. With an additional hour or two at school, children will have more time to master the core subjects and still have time for art, music, and sports. This extra time, says Gabrieli, will also give teachers m.....
