Welcome

Lately we've criticized the media for not asking candidates about education during presidential debates.  We've urged the candidates to lay out their comprehensive K-12 education proposals as students go back to school.

Now we're making some progress!  Candidates and the media are beginning to address critical issues at the heart of education reform - higher standards, better teaching, and more time and support for learning.

  • It may be beneficial to run in cycles so that more instructional time was spent teaching new material rather than reviewing what was taught lasts year. Family vacations would be possible year-round.

  • YES, one long summer break esentially wastes the first several weeks of the next year in re-learning. Four quarters with three weeks between sessions should be implemented to retain learning, allow for "vacations" and teacher training. The pay argument holds no water if teachers are required to teach the same number of days. We should also require contact hours as opposed to contact days.
